This
virus is caused by the herpes simplex virus
( type 2) and is usually transmitted to the
victim while he or she is engaged in
un-protected sex
with a partner who is already infected
with the virus.
Note: The use of condoms, while
statistically safer than unprotected sex,
is not 100% effective in stopping the
transmission of STD's such herpes.
Only
abstinence and/or sexual relations where
both partner are totally monogamous (such as
a faithful marriage union) is 100% safe.
Symptoms and
Signs :
The
incubation period for the virus is usually
about a week, after which the virus produces
itching, burning, soreness, and small
blisters in the genital area.
The blisters burst to leave small, painful
ulcers, which heal within 10 to 21
days.
The
virus may cause lymph nodes in the groin
area to become enlarged and painful. Other
symptoms during an outbreak may include
headache and fever. Women with genital
herpes may find urination very painful if
the urine comes in contact with the
sores.
Herpes
sores appearing around the mouth area are
usually Herpes Type1 (Cold Sores);
however it is possible for the Herpes Type 2
virus to be transmitted to the mouth
area during oral sex with an infected
partner.

Conditions
Sometimes Confused with Herpes :
Canker
sores are usually found inside the mouth and
are gray with a distinct edge. They usually heal
within a week or two without any kind of treatment.
Impetigo
is a highly contagious bacterial infection that can
produce crusty blisters. Impetigo is more common in
children than adults.
Molluscum
is a viral infection of the skin that produces
lesions that are raised,
with a central dimple. The herpes virus lesions do
not have a central dimple.
Yeast
or Bacterial Infections can sometimes be
confused with herpes because
of the pain and itch that may be involved. However,
these type of infections usually do not produce any
blistering.
Syphilis
is another sexually transmitted disease that
causes chancres that may be
confused with herpes. However, Syphilis chancres are
usually not found in clusters
as Herpes blisters are, and Syphilis, unlike Herpes,
usually responds to antibiotics.
